Outdoor Living: Modern Patio Design Ideas

Outdoor Living: Modern Patio Design Ideas

This posts goes over the few design areas to focus on when it comes to creating a modern patio design.

Lighting: A modern home will be a well lit space. So you’ll want to have as much lighting around your patio as possible.

This could mean hanging up wall lights on the side of your home. Or putting uplights at the base of trees and walls to create some dramatic ambient lighting. And if you have a pergola covering your patio, this could have lights fitted to it. For more ideas and some pictures have a look at my post here: A Bright Safe Space: Modern Outdoor Lighting Ideas.

Seating and Modern Patio Furniture: The type and design of furniture you use for your patio will really set the style for the space. Go with a neutral color for your furniture – either white, black, or wooden.

Flooring: In the patio pictures in the mood board above, you can see that a modern option for a patio floor is a neutral colored (white, light grey) stone or concrete one. With the exception of the dark wooden floors in picture (4) – which contrast well with the light colored furniture.

Adding Shade and Cover: A modern pergola is the way to go. Use straight planks of wood, the darker the better, mixed in with a steel frame – just like in picture (6). Have a look at my post here for more pergola pictures and ideas: Modern Pergola Designs Gallery and Notes

The Doors: Modern patio doors will be sliding thin framed glass ones, that go from the floor all the way to the ceiling.

The Pegboard House: Inventive Ideas on Using Pegboards Around the House

The Pegboard House: Inventive Ideas on Using Pegboards Around the House

When most people think of pegboards, they will picture them being used for customized storage. But you can get creative with them, paint over them, and use them in more unique ways – such as a pegboard headboard (seen in picture (1) DIY steps here), a headboard that you can fit lights to or a book shelf.

Inventive Uses

  • Create a mobile wall divider and storage wall with pegboard sheets and casters (Ideas Mood Board: DIY Room Dividers) – just like the one in picture (3) which you can find the DIY for here [in Dutch]
  • Use a pegboard to create a holiday wall. Arrange pegs to create a Christmas tree shape for Christmas (7), a pumpkin shape for Halloween, or a star for the 4th of July.
  • Keep your bedside table clutter free by having a mini pegboard wall behind the table to hang up beside items – from watches and books to charging phones and wallets (2).
  • Check out that 3D pegboard table runner in picture (6) – get the DIY steps here. Instead of those geometric decor pieces on the peg stands, you could create paper angels for Christmas, numbers for a birthday, or spell out someone’s name – the possibilities are endless
  • You can create a vertical garden by using long pegs or hooks to hang up planters above each other
  • Create a command center in the kitchen – hang up a clock, letter rack, paper sorters, a penholder, and a sheet of metal and use magnets to create a bulletin board.

Creative Storage Ideas

  • Hang a pegboard onto the back of a door – to hang up clothes, scarves, or even as a jewelry holder
  • Instead of creating a tile backsplash in the kitchen or bathroom, use pegboard sheets to create a customizable backsplash with storage – just like the kitchen backsplash in picture (5)
  • Create a coat rack in the foyer

Decorating

Here are some ways you can go about decorating and styling a pegboard:

  • Painting over it is the easiest option
  • Or how about creating a pattern (chevron) or use a stencil to paint over it
  • Use metal pegs – like copper.
  • Frame your pegboard – just like the one in the home office in picture (4)

The Classic Look: Black and White Bathroom Decor Ideas

The Classic Look: Black and White Bathroom Decor Ideas

Here are some black and white bathroom ideas that will help you balance the two colors in the same space.

Balancing the Black and the White

Do you want to have your walls white or black? Most black and white bathrooms will have white walls, and this creates a more spacious and bright feeling space.

In picture (3) you can see a bathroom that uses black walls, creating a more intimate and luxurious feeling space.

If you want to create a more black heavy bathroom, then check out my post here: Luxury With Color: Black Bathroom Ideas

Black Decor and Accent Pieces

If you want to keep your bathroom to a more white color palette, then opt for white walls, along with white flooring and cabinets. You can add splashes of black through:

  • The crown molding seen in picture (6)
  • Through accent tiles (5)
  • Use a black rug
  • Hang up an art piece in a black frame
  • Or paint the bathroom door black (1)

Other decor ideas include hanging up black towels, using a black frame for your vanity mirror, or using black light fixtures.

How To Make a Bathroom Feel Larger

Using a lot of black can make a space feel smaller. But here are some ways that will counter that, making a bathroom feel larger:

  • Hang up a large mirror
  • Opt for glossy surfaces for your cabinets and countertops, even the tiling – as the light bounces off of these glossy surfaces making the space feel larger
  • Make sure the bathroom is well lit. Recessed ceiling lights are the way to go as they create a lot of lighting and a modern look.

Color Style Guide: Purple Basement Ideas

Color Style Guide: Purple Basement Ideas

When it comes to decorating any space with a color such as purple, there are 3 main questions to ask yourself 1) how much purple? 2) what shade of purple, and 3) what purple pieces should be included? The purple basement ideas in this post will help you transform your space.

How Much Purple

There are a few options to choose from when it comes to painting the basement purple and decorating it. The option to go with will be based on how much purple you want styling your space.

  • A bold basement look would have all of the walls painted in purple, and maybe even the ceiling (or you could have a white ceiling)
  • A step down from this option is to create a feature wall. This is one wall in the basement that is painted purple, while the rest are painted a neutral color (white, grey, off white). This one purple wall will really stand out.
  • And the last option is to paint all of the walls white. This will create a blank canvas of a room that you can decorate with purple accent pieces (listed out below).

What Shade of Purple

The shade of purple you use to decorate your basement will really set how it feels and looks. A dark purple paint color will make the space feel cozy and luxurious. While a light purple creates a brighter and spacious feeling basement.

What Purple Pieces to Include

Whether you paint the walls white or purple, here is a list of ways you can decorate your basement space with purple pieces.

  • A purple area rug can add a pop of color to the space
  • Purple curtains
  • Repaint any cabinet or closet doors you have (DIY Challenge: Give Your Closet Doors a Makeover)
  • The seating area can help create the purple color palette for your basement. Go with a purple couch. Or go with a neutral colored one (like white, off white, grey) and style it with purple pillows and a blanket.
  • See if you can get a purple art piece to hang up. Or hang up a black and white art piece in a purple frame
  • If you have any light fixtures around, see if you can replace the lampshades with purple ones
