Indie Bedroom Ideas

The indie bedroom style is quite like the bohemian style in that it is about being casual, relaxed, and not really obsessing over organization and a minimalist look – much like a musician’s loft. Where it differs from the bohemian style is that there are less hanging drapes and colorful fabrics – (see here for more on bohemian: The Free Spirit: Bohemian Bedroom Ideas).

The photos above give some good designs and decorating ideas for an indie style bedroom. Instead of having closets everything is really out in the open – like having book stacked on the floor as seen in picture (2) and all your clothes on clothing rails (3). Check out the casual curtains in picture (4) – no real curtains, just pieces of fabric hanging by the windows. You have the mattress on the floor, framed pictures leaning up against the wall, and having exposed brick walls creates a more rustic vibe (5).

Other indie bedroom ideas and decorating pieces include sticking up pictures on the wall as seen in pictures (6) (7) and (8), without frames – as it is all about being causal and not worrying about clean design. There aren’t that many bed designs really, but we thought we would highlight the major styles as the bed you use can play a big role in how your bedroom looks and feels. It is the biggest piece of furniture in the room – so it becomes a natural focal point.

Platform Beds: The benefit of having a platform bed is that there is no need to have a box spring. Doing this creates a more modern bedroom style as seen in pictures (2) and (3) (Room Guide: Modern Bedroom Ideas and Designs).

. There are platform beds that stick out on the sides – giving you a little space to put small items like glasses, phones, books, etc.

Sleigh Bed: A sleigh bed is a type of platform bed that can be wooden or upholstered. Because of its elegantly curved headboard, baseboard, and legs it resembles a sleigh (4) (5).

French: If you want to go for a more traditional, vintage style bed, then look to French bed sets. French style furniture is more decorative, timeless, and rounded as seen in pictures (6) and (7).

Grand Statement Beds: A 4 poster bed (8) or a canopy bed set (9) are more unique styles (Romantic Ideas: Canopy Bedroom Designs). You can even hang drapes from the canopy bed to create a more romantic, secluded feeling (How to Create a Romantic Bedroom: Pictures, Designs and Decor Ideas).

Space Saving: Bunk beds and loft beds (where you have a desk under the top bunk) are ideal for kids rooms (Cool Bedroom Ideas for Kids) (Bunk Bed Ideas for an Awesome Kids Room). For kids sharing a room or for a guest bedroom there is the trundle bed – which is a single bed with roll out mattress underneath (10). Then there are built in beds – more common in kids rooms (11) but also can be done in master bedrooms. Turning an Attic Into A Bedroom: Ideas and Designs

There aren’t that many differences when it comes to attic / loft bedroom ideas versus designing any other bedroom in the house. Have a look at my Bedrooms Mood Board Collection page for more specific design ideas and styles.

The Uniqueness of an Attic

You will likely have an oddly shaped room with angular walls and ceiling as seen in pictures (1) and (2). The heat or cold could be an issue depending on where you live – as the attic is less insulated than the rest of the house. On the plus side, being on the top floor means you can have some amazing skylight windows (3) (4) (5) (6) – and these windows can be large and don’t need to be curtained off as there is more privacy being higher up.

Rustic Vs. Modern

In the pictures above you can see examples of loft bedrooms that have left the beams exposed – creating a more rustic, charming and traditional design style (7). Then there are the attics that are more finished and look like any other bedroom in the house (8).

Built In Units

Because of the odd shape an attic can have, to make best use of the space it is ideal to have furniture custom built to fit into the crazy angles as seen in pictures (9) (10) and (11)1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/10/11

Design Tips and Pictures for Designing a Bedroom in Orange

Orange Bedroom Ideas

The biggest decision when it comes to orange bedroom ideas is “how much orange?”. This comes down to personal taste. A bedroom with all the walls covered in orange, as seen in pictures (1) and (2) can feel just right for some people and overwhelming for others. A step down from that is to just paint the one wall that is up against the headboard orange while the rest of the walls in the bedroom are painted a more neutral color like white (3) (4) (5). This one orange wall will create a great focal point in the room. A step down from that is to keep the walls and decor in the room neutral, very simple and color coordinated and add in splashes of orange – which will really pop out (6) (7).

You don’t really need to have many orange pieces in the bedroom to create an orange styled color scheme. Just check out pictures (8) (9), and the teal and orange bedroom in picture (10). One or two orange accessories like pillows, a bed sheet, a wall painting, or plants – is all that is needed.

Just one last design note on painting the walls orange. You can go the simple route by painting the wall(s) in a single orange color, or there are easy ways of creating a more textured look as seen in picture (11) – simply by using household items like a sponge or a dry brush.
