Work and Design: Sewing Room Decor Ideas

A lot of your workspace, equipment, and materials can be turned into decor features for your sewing room. For example a mood board can also act as a wall decor feature just by putting a great frame around it. Or how about putting up rows of clipboards to hang up your mood board pieces?

The great thing about a sewing workspace is that you’ll have a lot of colorful fabric around. This can be hidden away in draws or cupboards. Or they can be stored in a way that displays them in the room like in picture (1). How about using ladders to hang the fabric on, or using open furniture like cubby holes/closets, shelves, or vintage baskets (2) where you can store your fabric in the open. Another idea is to have your thread out in the open too, just like in picture (3). Have a look at our sewing room designs post and check out the photo of the thread spools hanging up on the wall in a frame. It is one thing to have all of these colorful threads and fabrics out in the open, but if you color coordinate everything (group colors together) it will look even better.

If you have some great looking tools, these can be stored and displayed out in the open too – just like the scissors hanging and decorating the wall in picture (4). If you don’t have any, check out Etsy for some vintage sewing tools that you can use as decoration pieces – things like scissors, measuring tapes, an antique sewing machine, and vintage spools of thread (5).

Ideas Mood Board: DIY Room Dividers

Curtains: Hanging a curtain is probably the best way to create DIY room dividers. Curtains are cheap and take up little space. The hard part comes in hanging them. Options include hanging up a curtain rod or fixing a wire across the room from one wall to another. Picture (2) shows a curtain rail that is fitted to the ceiling instead of the wall – which is great if you don’t want the divider to cut across the entire room. Go for the traditional style curtain (a single sheet of fabric) or there are the more modern IKEA style panels as seen in picture (4).

Book Cases: The good thing with using a book case is that you can have a full height one or a half height one. If you are using a half height book case like an IKEA Expedit, then you won’t have to worry about the lighting when you divide the room. When it comes to curtains or a full height book case, depending on the placement of the lights and the divider, part of the room might be cut off from the lighting. A table or floor lamp can easily solve this.

Building a Room Divider: Old doors can be hinged together to create a folding and portable room divider screen. For a more uniformed look how about using IKEA Billy bookcase doors? These doors or just sheets of hinged together wood can be upholstered for a softer and more decorative look as seen in picture (10).

Elegant and Stylish Plant Decor Ideas

When it comes to decorating with plants, vintage bottles make for great decorative vases. Go for a uniformed look like in picture (1) by having the same bottles for your arrangement, and group them together in a vintage style milk bottle basket. Another idea is to use different sized and colored bottles to create a more lively arrangement.

A great DIY project is to use oven-bake clay to create miniature clay pots. Rachel at Transient Expression goes through step by step on how to make the faceted pots seen in picture (2).

Picture (3) shows Amanda’s (Wit and Whislte) hanging terrarium she got from Score and Solder.

Another DIY idea is to mount bottles to a piece of wood to hang from the wall (4) – DIY Tutorial. Or how about hanging a corbel on the wall that can act as a decorative shelf for a single vase.

1012 Tera have these minimalist style wall vases (5) that can be grouped together to create a striking wall decor arrangement. Because of the minimalist style, the flowers really are the focus of the display.

A plant hanger itself can be quite decorative. The one pictured (6) is from an Esty shop that has a brass accent piece in the middle. These plant hangers can also be easily made with some cord, rope or thread by following these instructions.

Having a number of vases, all the same, housing the same kind of plant creates a nice clean look as we saw in picture 1. In picture (7) a caterpillar vase displays the same type of flower.

Ideas for Decorating With Ladders

In The Living Room: There is quite a bit that can be done with an old ladder. Some ideas for decorating with ladders in the living room include: using one to hang up throw blankets in the living room (1), or as a shelf for photo frames (2) or plants (3).

The DIYer: Jennifer at A Merry Mishap shows how to create the elegant ladder in picture (4). A great alternative to the traditional bulky wooden ladders is a thin metal one (5).

In The Foyer: A ladder can also be used in the foyer as a coat or shoe rack, with hooks on the sides for keys and jackets (6).

Other Ladder Decor Ideas: A step ladder (7) is being used as bedroom side table. Picture (8) shows another ladder in a bedroom, this time being used as a shoe rack. They can also be used in the bathroom as a towel rack . A two sided ladder can have planks of wood in between the steps to create a wide shelf (9). Put two of these ladders side by side with even longer planks of wood to create an even wider unit.
