Playing With Copper: DIY Ideas

Copper, the sleek material you can buy at a hardware store. Rustic yet polished, it’s no surprise why it is a popular choice for DIY projects. Here are some of the best copper DIY ideas that I have seen and been inspired by so far.

Tube Stands: In picture (1) a block of wood and some copper wire and pipe have been used to create a chemist vase – by A Merry Thought. Chelsea from Lovely Indeed has created a wall mounted test tube like copper wall planter (2). It is a simple and minimalist way of adding some plants into a room’s decor. Chairs: Room of Karma has upcycled old wooden chairs (3) by painting them with copper colored paint. The chairs in picture (4) are from Anthropologie and is not an actual DIY project. But by using metal instead of wooden chairs and painting them in copper spray paint you can get a whole different effect.

Hangers: Here are some great DIY ideas using copper piping – they are so stylish and minimalist. For the floating clothes rack (5), by Love Aesthetics, all you need to do is hang a long copper pipe using two hooks and metal cable. This would make a great looking coat rack by the front door.

The copper kitchen hooks DIY (6) comes from the Finnish blog, Bambula. They were made from half inch copper elbows. To find out how they were made, check out the pictures here.

Planters: To make the planters in picture (7), all you need are some cap fittings and ketchup (yup). Check out the tutorial over at Poppytalk.

Another spray painting idea in picture (8), but this time a glass beaker gets the royal treatment – by A Merry Mishap. And lastly there is the hanging geometric planter (9) by Fire and Flowers.

Relaxing and Cozy Living Room Lighting Ideas

So here are some ideas and pictures on how to light up a family styled living room. Not those huge living rooms, or the ones that are never used. These ideas are for rooms you always use – to watch tv, read, and relax in.

Let’s talk first about the more interesting living room lighting ideas, and then get into the more functional ones later. First up are some accent lighting design ideas (or what I like to call “style lighting”). If you want a well designed space, you need to layer the lighting in the room. Just using ceiling lights doesn’t cut it. You need to mix it up a bit, a ceiling light along with a floor or table lamp. Here are some other style lighting ideas that will help mix it up and layer the lighting in the room.

Style Lighting Ideas

Display Lighting: As the name suggest, this is used to showcase items around the living room. For example book case lighting. Or how about cabinet lights shining onto media players and their controls. These lights do make it easier to find the right book and use the media players – but they are mostly for design and style.

How about shining a light onto shelves to highlight family pictures. Or if you have art work – use a gallery light (hung onto the wall above the art piece) or just a side table light pointing up onto the art will work.

If you have an accent wall, one wall that is painted a different color or wallpapered differently than all the others to create a focal piece in the room, then this can be lit up too. The best way to do this would be with ceiling lights – like down lights that can be angled towards the wall, just like in picture (1).

A simple way of adding some accent lighting to your living room is to back light your TV, just like in picture (2). Adding this soft glow creates a relaxing ambiance in the room – and it also reduces eyestrain if you like watching TV in the dark. Another way to add a nice soft glow in the room is to put lights behind your couch, shining up onto the wall.

Mood Lighting: A great way to be in complete control of your living room lighting is to hook up your ceiling lights to a dimmer switch. This way you can instantly switch from a brightly lit living room to a more romantic one. Another way of adding mood lighting is to use a mood light, like the one in picture (3) (which can be bought here). If you want to create a romantic setting, then turn the mood light to a dark blue or purple. Or if it is a dark and dull day, with little sunshine outside, set the mood light to a bright green or yellow.

If you want to create a cozy vibe in the living room, avoid lighting the ceiling. Turn off your ceiling lights and use your table lamps and display lighting. Here are some other cozy inducing lighting ideas for a living room:

  • Floor lamps work well to create that cozy feel, but they can be placed next to the couch and also be used as reading lights
  • Use string and rope lights if you want to create a more enchanting feel – just like in picture (4)
  • A DIY idea would be to find a bunch of long branches, spray paint them, and then wrap string lights around them to create a soft glowing floor lamp (5)
  • Or for a more bohemian vibe, place some lanterns on the coffee table (6) and on the floor (these can be candle or battery powered)

Standard Lighting Ideas

When it comes to the standard light fixtures in your living room, a popular choice would be recessed lighting. These lighting fixtures are fitted into your ceiling, so everything is hidden creating a clean and modern looking living room. If you have a high ceiling, then pendant or track lighting will work best. Track lights are a great option because they only use one electrical outlet in the ceiling but you’ll have a number of lights. These individual lights can be pointed to different areas of the living room.

For a more creative ceiling lighting idea, have a look at cove lighting. Cove lighting is when you have a drop down ceiling, and lights are hidden away in a cutaway section. The light softly bounces off of the ceiling and walls and into the room. Another version of cove lighting is when you fit crown molding a few inches below the ceiling – lights sit on top of the molding, creating a soft glow in the room just like in picture (7).

 Dream Bedrooms: 6 Amazing Features

Here are some dream, yet realistic, bedroom features – no shark tanks or slides to pools, though that would be cool.

Relaxing Spaces: Some dream features on peoples’ lists include adding additional relaxing spaces to the bedroom. Picture (1) shows a swinging day bed, or how about hanging a hammock?  While being surrounded by books tucked away in a corner, and looking out of a window makes for a relaxing reading nook anyone would want to have (2).

Walk In: How about a room full of shelves and mirrors, with stools and an island counter. Letting you store, organize, and display all of your clothes, shoes, and bags in their own private room (3).

Look Up: Having a double height ceiling creates a grand and luxurious bedroom. Having a higher up ceiling makes room for other great features. Like chandelier or cove lighting. You can also have different structural elements like a dome, or show off exposed beams like the bedrooms in pictures (4) and (5)

Romance: In any bedroom the bed is the focal point of the space.  Having a larger bedroom allows for a centrepiece bed like a canopy one just like in picture (6). Another dream feature, for those living in colder climates, is having your own fireplace in your bedroom (7).

A Step Away: How great would it be to have a bedroom that steps out onto a swimming pool deck (8)?

Living Art: The most classic of dream bedroom features is an amazing view (9) (10). This has to be the number one dream feature, it is for me. Waking up in the morning to an amazing sight, and it all changes as the day goes on and turns into night. 1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/10

Romantic Ideas: Canopy Bedroom Designs

Traditionally, canopy beds would just be a bed with a frame around it. These types of beds are great for larger bedrooms, as they a) create a focal point in the room, and b) make the bed area feel more secluded and intimate. You can take these types of beds and style the room in so many different ways. You can even recreate the same romantic and secluded feeling without a canopy bed.

The easiest way of adding drapery to a canopy bed is just like in picture (1) – by hanging them over the top of the frame. Another way is to have them hang down and use tie backs to curtain them off (2). You can also turn the drapes into curtains so the bed can be open and airy during the day, and closeed off at night – just like the queen size beds in pictures (3) and (4). Picture (5) shows a normal king size bed, but curtains have been attached to the ceiling to create that canopy effect.

You don’t need to have a special canopy or poster bed to create that secluded feeling. Another way of creating that intimate and romantic mood is to hang a canopy just above the headboard (6). Or go for the bohemian look in picture (7) and use a hanging net to create the canopy. Pictures (8) (9) and (10) show drapes and a bamboo mat hanging over ordinary beds and furniture.

Wrapping string lights around the frame of a canopy bed is a romantic touch (11). If you use modern LED string lights, which produce less heat than normal ones, you can even wrap thin fabric/drapery around them to create a soft glow. 1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/10/11
