PASSPORT: Remodeled Edwardian London Apartment Tour – Kitchen and Outdoor Patio

Edwardian London Apartment Tour

It is a balancing act to take an old period apartment, and try to update it to modern standards without losing it’s charm and character.

This Edwardian home came with high ceilings, a roof terrace, beautiful trim and molding, and a 1930s layout of small closed off rooms. It took the owners 4 years to find this apartment on the market and to remodel the whole space into a home that feels spacious and brings in more light. From House to Home UK.

Design Your Space: Outdoor Kitchen Ideas

Outdoor kitchen ideas

Are you looking to build a full on outdoor kitchen, with food prep countertops and a sink? Or are you picturing a simplier, small outdoor kitchen that you could build yourself? In this post you’ll find all of the ideas you’ll need to design and build your own outdoor kitchen, large or small.

How To Design Your Outdoor Kitchen

When thinking about building your own outdoor kitchen, you will need to balance what you want with the space you have to build it on.

For example if you want a sink, will you be able to hook up your outdoor kitchen space to the house utilities?

Cookers can easily use gas tanks. And you can place a grill anywhere.

Will you want electricity out in your outdoor kitchen, for:

  • A cooler, fridge
  • Lighting (there are also non electrical lighting ideas, which I list out below)
  • A fan or mister

How Much Space Do You Need?

Another question to ask is how much space will you need? Do you want to be able to do food prep work outdoors, or will you be doing that indoors. Does that mean you’ll need a sink, and more counterpace then?

Near the House

Keeping the outdoor kitchen near, or even attached to the outside of the house, makes it easier to light the space, hang up a fan, has better access to the utilities, and it is easier to keep the space covered.

Keeping it Covered

Will you want your kitchen to be covered? Most of the outdoor kitchens in the mood board above use a more pergola like roofing structure. This provides enough shade when it is too hot. But you’ll want it covered if it rains a lot where you live.

Going The DIY Route

There are much simpler and budget friendly outdoor kitchen designs.

Building your own countertop for a simple outdoor grill is a simple 1 or 2 weekend project.

It could be built out of pallets.

Or use bricks/hollow blocks for a base and build a countertop using wood to make a concrete mold. You can find the step by step guide to the DIY build shown below here.

Or how about the simple wooden frame in picture (3)

Or a simple low cost IKEA kitchen cart can be used as a portable outdoor kitchen. This can be used to bring out all of the ingredients from inside the house out to the grill, and can be used as a simple food prep counter, or outdoor kitchen island.

Modern vs. Traditional Styles

If you want to create a more traditional styled outdoor kitchen, then make heavy use of stone for the base, and a tiled or stone curved countertop – just like in picture (4)

For a more modern outdoor kitchen design, look to use concrete and create clean straight lines – like the kitchen in picture (5).

Outdoor Kitchen Lighting Ideas

When it comes to lighting your outdoor kitchen you can either go with permanent light fixtures that will need to be wired up. Such as wall lights attached and wired to the house pointing towards the outdoor kitchen, just like in picture (6)

Or there are more basic ideas that can be installed and used within minutes. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Tabletop candle lanterns
  • Tabletop fire pits
  • Tiki torches
  • Solar stake lights
  • Solar string lights

Style Guide: Pink Bedroom Ideas and Designs

Style Guide: Pink Bedroom Ideas and Designs

There are 3 ways your can go about designing a pink bedroom. Choosing which option to go with will come down to: how much pink do you want? Here are the 3 pink bedroom ideas and options to choose from:

  1. The All White Bedroom
  2. The Feature Wall
  3. Surrounded by Pink

1. The All White Bedroom

This design option is for those who want to subtly decorate their bedroom pink, but don’t want it to be overwhelming.

To do this, you’ll have your walls painted white. It could also be another neutral color like off white, cream, grey, or even black.

Having all of your walls painted a neutral color like white, creates a blank canvas of a bedroom. Now you can decorate the space with pink bedroom pieces, and they will really stand out and style the space.

Use the focal pieces in the bedroom to decorate the space pink. This includes the bed. You could go with a pink bed frame, or just go with a normal one (say wooden) and buy really nice pink bed sheets. A white bedroom with pink bedsheets – bam you’ve got yourself a pink bedroom.

Other focal points in the bedroom that can be pink include:

Blue and pink would be a good combination for a bedroom, if you wanted to add in another color. Blue walls with pink decor would be the way to go.

2. The Feature Wall

The second option is to use create a feature wall in the bedroom. This is when you paint all of the walls a neutral color, let’s say white, and then have 1 wall painted pink.

This one wall will really stand out since all of the other walls are the same color. In the bedroom the feature wall will be the one behind the headboard.

You can also add pink decor pieces, and pink focal points (bed sheets, curtains (all the things listed in option 1)).

3. Surrounded by Pink

This one is for the brave and bold. That is to paint all of the walls pink. Even the ceiling could be painted pink too.

You can break up all of this pink by having white crown molding. Or neutral colored curtains and bed sheets.

The Shade

The shade of pink you use will also impact the feel and style of the room. Hot pink for a more bright and bold bedroom, while a light pink, pastel even, will create a more vintage look.

Style Guide: Black and Gold Bedroom Ideas

Style Guide: Black and Gold Bedroom Ideas

Black and gold. Now that is a classy combination for a bedroom color palette. It can be a bit tough trying to figure out which parts of the bedroom to make black and which parts to make gold without overdoing it. There is the mood board above that shows different interior designs, and here is a quick list of some black and gold bedroom ideas to help get you started.

If you keep to a black and white color palette in the bedroom, then all you’ll need is just 1 gold statement piece that will stand out and style the room. You could always do more though.

Black and gold bedroom ideas

This 1 golden piece could any of these decorating ideas:

  • A painting over the bed just like in bedroom (1)
  • A gold bed sheet set (2) (3)
  • A chandelier or a pendant lamp, like the chandelier in picture (4)
  • A bedside lamp (5)
  • A gold bedroom decor piece such as a sculpture
  • Or a golden piece of furniture such as a stool

A golden frame on a black wall really stands out. To keep to the strict color palette for your room, you’ll want to go with a black and white painting (6) or picture in the frame. Hanging up a colorful piece will take away from the glamorous black and gold bedroom color scheme. Or you could just put up a decorative frame with nothing in it just like in bedrooms (7) (8).
