When designing your guest room, whether it is in the basement or another room in the house, try and imagine what it is like to be in a hotel room. It is a relaxing, clutter free space that has all the little amenities you could need for your stay. The basement guest room ideas I’ve listed out in this post, look to make your guest feel right at home.

Keeping the Space Clutter Free

You want to try and recreate the hotel experience in a guest room. So try and avoid storing things out in the open. If you have to store things in the same space, then either use decorative and good looking storage containers (like a wicker hamper, a wooden trunk), or hide it out of the way with a DIY room divider (Ideas Mood Board: DIY Room Dividers).

Simple Decorating Ideas

Keep the decor simple, and avoid cluttering up the space. Some simple ideas include a framed painting above the headboard, or a decorative lamp.

Try and decorate the space through the functional and feature pieces in the room.

To really create a designer and luxurious black kitchen space, try and avoid having any other colors in the space. Take out any colorful pieces from the kitchen. This doesn’t mean you can’t add some warmth and shades into the space – they just need to be handpicked pieces. Here are some black kitchen ideas to help you design your space.

Use Neutral and Natural Colors

Add pieces into the kitchen that have a natural or neutral color. So use natural materials like metals (brushed stainless steel, copper, brass), wood, and stone (tiles, marble), or even brick.

Check out the great combination of black cabinets and an exposed brick wall in the kitchen in picture (2).

Or see how the wood really stands out and adds warmth to the black kitchen in picture (1).

Try to balance the amount of black you have. All black cabinets, with a white backsplash and countertop is an example of good balance – just like in picture (3).

Then again some people might like an all black kitchen (4). You can add some style to it by infusing different textures. A stone wall (6), a wooden one like in picture (7), or glossy tiles (8) adds a design element to otherwise flat dull black walls.

Making Sure It Is a Bright Space

The black decor and walls of the kitchen will make the space feel quite dark. So you’ll need to make sure you have enough lighting, especially around the work areas (countertops, cooker, over the kitchen island, over the kitchen table, and over the sink).

Some elegant lighting ideas include black pendant lights, but the inside of the light shade is another color like gold or silver.

The Finishing Touch: Wainscoting Ideas and Designs

When you picture wainscoting, you’ll normally imagine white wainscoting going about halfway up the wall, and the wall is painted. But there are a few other wainscoting ideas and designs to consider.

Painting Over the Wainscoting

Have a look at picture (1). The wainscoting panels have been painted the same color as the wall. This adds depth and style to a normal flat wall. It is a subtle design element that creates a luxurious finish.

Another DIY option is to paint the wainscoting a different shade than the wall. The best way to do this is to paint the wainscoting a darker shade (say grey, red, or blue) than the wall.

And then there is always the timeless and classic option of keeping the walls and wainscoting both white, or off white – just like in the living room in picture (3).

Different Wainscoting Styles

There are 2 main styles when it comes to wainscoting. You have embossed wainscoting panels, where it sticks out like individual picture frames – just like the bathroom wainscoting in picture (6). And then there are debossed panels, where it is recessed, pushed in (5).

Usually wainscoting will be one big square or rectangle. Picture (3) shows two rectangles close together creating a thick frame. While the wainscoting in picture (6) has a double railing layer on top. And then you could always get more creative with the shape and designs, just like the wainscoting in picture (7).

Different Heights

You can see that the rooms in the mood board have gone with different wainscoting heights. The best look though would be wainscoting that is somewhere between half way up the way and a third up the wall. So a bit lower down.

Wainscoting is technically when you add wooden panels to the lower part of the wall. But there is always the option of adding full height, floor to ceiling, paneling to decorate the space. Just like the living room in picture (4).

Some Other Decorative Wall znd Ceiling Design Ideas

Here are a few other ideas to consider when remodeling your walls:

  • How about adding decorative crown molding. There is the simple standard crown molding, with the different grooves. Or there is the traditional, Victorian style crown molding with elaborate designs.
  • If you have a chandelier, mini chandelier, a large pendant light, or even a fan in the room, then why not frame it with a ceiling medallion.

To really create a white home office, you are going to need to take out any colored items that are in the room. This doesn’t mean you can’t have some colorful pieces. But they need to be hand selected to go inline with your color palette.

Adding 1 or 2 colors into your overall color scheme is alright. Any more and you start taking away from the overall white color scheme. Here is a list of white home office ideas to help you transform your space.

Adding Pops of Color

  • Use a colorful top for your desk
  • A colorful chair cushion can add a pop of color to the space
  • So can colorful stationary storage containers
  • Use a colorful large frame to hang up a piece of black and white artwork or photograph
  • Or use a neutral colored frame (white, black, silver) and hang up a colorful piece of artwork
  • Add some warmth to your home office space by using wooden pieces. Check out the home office in picture (1) to see what I mean
  • Use a colorful area rug
  • Spray paint a cork bulletin board white/pink/blue/gold
  • Having plants in your home office will add some shades of green (5)

Adding Textures and Layers

To create a luxury home office style, try and stick to the overall white color scheme when adding pieces to the space. But look for white pieces that have a subtle texture or pattern.
