Notes from a Remodel: Bathroom Tile Ideas

Tiles are the way to go when remodelling a bathroom. But there are a lot of choices and options to choose from. Everything from the size of the tile you use, to whether you use a glossy or matte tile plays a big role in how the space feels and looks. Here are some design notes when it comes to different bathroom tile ideas.

The Effect of Tile Size

Large tiles make a bathroom space feel more luxurious. It also creates a cleaner and more modern bathroom look since there is less grouting. The down side to using them is that they are more expensive and harder to install than small tiles.

Making A Bathroom Feel Bigger: Small Bathroom Tile Ideas

Large tiles tend to make a bathroom space feel bigger.

Try and create a seamless design. This means using the same tile for the floors and the walls as this help make the bathroom feel larger.

Other design tips include:

Using light colored tiles
And use tiles that have a glossy surface. The light will bounce off of them, creating a more spacious effect in the room.

Different Design Styles

There is so much that you can do with tiles:

You can mix and match different styles. Just like the combination in the bathroom in picture (1) which uses simple subway tiles for the walls and a more decorative tile for the floor.
You can mix and match different shades of the same color to create a subtle pattern
A border can be created with different tiles (3)
Even using different orientations can create different design styles – just like the bathroom in picture (5)

A Crackling Fire: Indoor Firewood Storage Ideas

Here is a quick list of creative and unique (some DIY) indoor firewood storage ideas:

A recess wall can have firewood stacked inside of it. Or how about stacking firewood inside of a built in shelf just like in picture (3).
If you don’t have too much firewood to store, then get yourself a decorative bucket – such as a copper, galvanized, or brass one.
Use a wooden crate. Put it on its side to make storing and retrieving the firewood easier, just like in picture (2)
If you want to keep your firewood out of sight, then a wicker hamper would work best
All you need to store and stack firewood are two sidewalls. See if you can get some open shelving, an open media console (6), or an open side table. IKEAS EXPEDIT and KALLAX units are open shelves that can have firewood stacked inside of them.

DIY Ideas

The firewood rack in picture (5) was made using 2 cinderblocks and some 2×4
And the rack in picture (4) was simply made out of metal plumbing pipes and connectors, all screwed to a wooden base – you can see the DIY tutorial here.

Color Guide: Grey Kitchen Ideas

A neutral color scheme (grey, white, off white) is always a good color scheme for a kitchen. These neutral shades create a timeless kitchen design. One option is to create a grey minimalist kitchen style, or add pops of color through the decor or feature pieces.

Here are some grey kitchen ideas that will help you design and style your space.

The Walls of Your Kitchen

When most people think of a ‘grey kitchen’, they’ll imagine a space with grey walls. This is one option, to paint all of the walls grey. But you could also paint all of the walls white and still have a grey kitchen.

If you paint the walls white, you can still style the space grey by using grey curtains, or a grey kitchen table cloth. Check out the ‘Styling the Kitchen Grey’ section below for more ideas on how to style a grey kitchen.

Luxury Grey or Light Grey

Whether you do paint the walls grey or only decorate the space with grey pieces (or both), the shade of grey you use will really impact the style and feel of the room.

A dark grey color kitchen palette, will feel more luxurious, and secluded. While light grey kitchen walls will make the space feel open, airy, and spacious. You can see how the shade of grade makes a big difference in pictures (1) and (6).

Styling the Kitchen Grey

Here is a quick list of items around the kitchen that can be grey to style the kitchen:

Or go with grey countertops
Look for grey curtains
How about using a grey table cloth or a grey kitchen table
Or grey seat cushions
See if you can get a grey centerpiece
There are grey light fixtures, lamp shades
Hang up some black and white photos/paintings in a grey frame

Laydown some grey kitchen rugs
Or hang up some grey kitchen towels

Pops of Color

If you want to create a minimalist kitchen style, then stick with a grey and white kitchen color palette. This means taking out (or storing away) any items in the kitchen that are not white or grey.

You can always add colorful pieces into your grey kitchen. But I would stick to 1 to 2 colors. Any more that that and you start to take away from the overall grey color scheme of the kitchen. Some good color combinations include:
