Design Tips for Modern Closet Doors

Design Tips for Modern Closet Doors

Here are some quick styling and design tips for modern closets and their doors:

No Handles: If you can, try and get closet doors that don’t have any handles. The best options are the doors that pop open when you push them. An alternative is to have a groove carved into the doors.

Having no handles creates a flat and sleek look in the room. The closet in picture (5) shows what I mean. And picture (4) is an example of handles that are carved into the closet door. Or check out the modern sliding closet doors in picture (2). And one way to fake it is to have the handles the same color as the doors, so they blend together – just like in picture (5).

You can still use handles. But try and find ones that are not so imposing on the overall look of the door – like the handles in pictures (1) and (3)

Built In Units: A modern closet should be a built in unit that goes from the floor to the ceiling – which you can see from all of the closets in the mood board above.

Glossy: If you want to make your bedroom feel larger, then go with doors that have a shiny and glossy surface. The light in the room will bounce off of these glossy surfaces making the room feel more spacious.

A Clutter Free Home: Modern Decor Ideas

A Clutter Free Home: Modern Decor Ideas

A modern home is a clutter free space. Which means that decor items are limited in modern styled rooms. There are some simple and elegant ways you can style a modern home without adding too many items to a space: such as through textures, adding greenery, paint color choice, and using premium materials for storage containers. The modern home decor ideas in this post will help you decorate your rooms in a minimalist and modern way.

Feature Pieces

More focus should be placed on the main feature pieces in a room, versus adding small decor items. Feature pieces include the furniture in a room and even the light fixtures. These items can really set the style for the space – so focus on getting modern styled pieces.

Textures

See how you can infuse subtle textures to your rooms. In the kitchen for example, marble would be a good material to include since it has a subtle white and grey texture to it. The same goes when looking for bed sheets, curtains, wallpaper patterns, and area rugs – look for materials and fabric that have a very subtle and elegant pattern.

A Modern Gallery Wall

See if you can add a gallery wall to some of your rooms. The way to keep a gallery wall looking modern is to use matching frames. Thin black frames look best.

Or even 1 simple large art piece can do the trick, just like the living room in picture (2).

The Color of the Room

If you take a look at pictures of modern rooms, either kitchens, bathrooms, or bedrooms, you can see that they mostly use clean neutral colors. Such as white, off white, or grey. This creates a minimalist style.

Adding Warmth to a Modern Room with Plants and Wood

To add some warmth into a modern room, look to have some plotted plants around the space. This will bring in shades of green. The same can be done with wooden features to bring in brown tones – use wooden chairs, tabletops, and minimalist decor pieces.

Storage as Decor

If you need to store items out in the open, then look to buy premium and good looking storage containers to store those items in. This way the storage containers themselves will act as decor pieces in the room. Look for containers made out of glass, steel, leather or brass.

Upstyling The Doors

If you have any doors in the room that you are looking to decorate (room doors, closet doors, or cabinets), see if you can give them a modern makeover. Check out my posts for DIY ideas here:

Try and avoid using handles when it comes to cabinet doors. See if you can get ones that push pop to open, or have a groove as a handle. You can buy the little push pop devices separately that can be fitted onto any cabinet door. Cabinet doors without handles sticking out creates a more modern and sleek look in a space – just like the kitchen in picture (6).

Stylish Living: Modern Dining Room Ideas and Designs

Modern Dining Room Ideas and Designs

A modern dining room is a clutter free and well designed space. This means there are only a few areas you need to focus on to create a stylish modern space. These areas are: the tables and chairs, the walls, and the lighting.

Creating a Modern Room With The Table and Chairs

Selecting The Table: The biggest item in a dining room is the table. This means that the style and design of it will really have a big impact on the overall styling of the room. In the modern dining room pictures in the mood board, you can see that a modern dining table is a simple, sleek wooden one. A darker wood will create a more luxurious dining room space – and see if you can get a table with metal legs, just like the one in picture (1).

Another option is a modern glass dining room set with wooden legs, just like the one in picture (5).

Pairing With Chairs: Once you have the table selected, then the next task is to pick out the modern chairs that will complement it. Go with a neutral shade such as white, off white, grey or black – just like the ones in the mood board above. Upholstered chairs are ideal for a more comfortable dining room.

Decor Pieces: Keep it simple with the centerpiece. Plants in a nice container would be the go to choice for a modern centerpiece.

And don’t forget you can add an area rug under the furniture to group the table and chairs together. Make sure the area rug is large enough so that the chairs can be pulled out and still rest on the rug. Go with a neutral colored area rug to complement the chairs and table.

Styling Your Walls

Just like the chairs and table, the paint colors used in a modern dining room are also neutral (grey, white, cream).

Simple wainscoting, seen in picture (4), can be used to break up flat walls. Other ways to break up a flat wall include: crown molding, and hanging up mirrors or framed pieces – like the gallery wall in picture (3).

Modern Dining Room Lighting

A modern home is a well lit space. In a dining room, use recessed ceiling lights for general lighting. These are lights that are fitted into the ceiling, hiding all the fixtures away, creating a sleek and modern look in the room.

Above the dining table, you might want to have a hanging pendant light that brings light down from the ceiling closer to the table. You can see in the mood board above some examples of these hanging pendant lights.

Modern Bathroom Design Ideas: From Lighting Design to Color Choice

Modern Bathroom Design Ideas: From Lighting Design to Color Choice

In this post of modern bathroom design ideas, I will go over the 3 main design features that will create a modern bathroom space: 1) color choice, 2) tiles and clean lines, and 3) lighting design.

Color Choice

In the mood board above you can see how all of the bathrooms use a very neutral color palette – made up of white, greys, and black. If you want to add some warmth to the space, then try and infuse some wooden features – just like the modern bathroom in picture (5). Or add some plants.

Tiles and Clean Lines

Large tiles are the way to go. You don’t see any small tiles in the bathrooms above. This goes hand in hand with the very clean-cut lines, and straight edges of a modern bathroom design. You have rectangle mirrors and straight dividers. There are no round edges.

Large tiles are more expensive and harder to put in. But since their is less grouting, you are left with a clean and sleek design.

Modern Bathroom Lighting

The light fixtures you use in the bathroom will play a big role in creating a modern feel for your space. You are going to want to mainly use recessed lights. These are lights that are fitted into your ceiling, hiding away all of the parts – leaving you with a sleek and modern bathroom.

You’ll want to have these covering your whole bathroom, everywhere from the vanity to over into the shower.

The vanity area, aka the mirror, will need some special lighting. Just using ceiling lights creates weird shadows on your face. Instead you’ll want to put up at least one wall light on both sides of the mirror. This will create even lighting. Picture what it looks like backstage at a fashion show. You’ll see those mirrors that have lights all the way around it.
