Style Guide: Modern Garden Design Ideas

Style Guide: Modern Garden Design Ideas

There are a few design techniques to keep in mind when creating your own modern garden design. You can see some of the similarities in the gardens in the pictures above.

Rectangles

You’ll notice that modern gardens are very boxy in their design. There are no round corners. Everything from the grass areas, to the borders, and seating are very rectangular – creating a minimalist look and feel in the garden space.

Isolated Greenery

All of the grass areas in modern garden designs are very isolated, meaning they are bordered off. You can see from the photos that each garden has a very specific area just for greenery – bordered off from other areas in the garden. While other areas are specifically built for other activities – patio, deck, etc. This helps create a clean, crisp look in the garden.

Color Scheme

And like most modern spaces in a home, a modern garden will make use of natural and neutral tones. You can see a combination of greys, black and white being used for the flooring, the garden walls, and the furniture. To add some warmth to the space, try and infuse wooden pieces.

Modern Lighting

A modern space is a well lit one. In the garden you have specific task lighting – these will be for pathways, steps, dining areas, and on the side of the house. While other lights are more for ambiance: uplights by trees and bushes, or light fixtures used to highlight any water features in the garden.

A Magical Space: Princess Bedroom Ideas

A Magical Space: Princess Bedroom Ideas

Everything from the paint on the walls to the lights you use can help create an enchanting bedroom. The princess bedroom ideas and decorations in this post will help you transform your space into a magical wonderland.

Painting the Room

Painting all of the walls and the ceiling pink in one way to go.

Or a toned down option is to paint one wall pink, the one behind the headboard, and the rest of the walls white. This creates a feature wall.

And the third option is to paint all of the walls white and add pops of pink to the bedroom though the main feature and furniture pieces, listed below.

Princess Pink Bedroom Ideas

How To Style the Bed

The bed is the main focal point in the room. So you’ll want to spend more time styling this area. A white bed would be the way to go. See if you can one that has a curved headboard as this creates a more vintage style (How to Design Your Own DIY Tufted Headboard in 4 Steps).

The bed sheets will play a big role in styling the room, since they take up a lot of visual space. So opt for pink and white decorative ones. The same goes for the pillow cases.

See if you can hang some fabric above the bed to create a magical canopy – just like the bedroom in picture (3).

Other Decor Pieces to Style a Princess Theme Bedroom

  • Hang up some lace and pink fabric curtains – add a valance for an even more magical look
  • A pink area rug is another way to add a pop of color to the bedroom
  • Hang up a pink art piece. Or hang up any art piece, but in a large pink frame
  • Restyle the bedroom closets with a coat of paint, and even add a ceiling medallion to frame the doorknobs for a unique touch (DIY Challenge: Give Your Closet Doors a Makeover)

Lighting a Fairytale Room

Here are some enchanting ways to light up the bedroom:

  • Hang some fairy lights around the room. Or use LED fairy lights (they give off less heat) and wrap them in fabric (4)
  • A mini chandelier is perfect for a girls princess bedroom
  • Frame that mini chandelier with a ceiling medallion – just like the bedroom in picture (5)

Creating a Stylish Workspace: Modern Home Office Ideas

Creating a Stylish Workspace: Modern Home Office Ideas

The best way to create a modern home office is to focus on the main areas and focal pieces of the space. This includes: the overall color scheme, the main furniture pieces (desk and chair), and the lighting.

Color Scheme

In the home office pictures in the mood board above, you can see that all of the home offices use a neutral color scheme – such as white or black. A dark grey could also work.

A good way to add color into a neutral home office space is to infuse it with natural materials. Try and infuse wooden pieces, such as a wooden desk or chair, or add some greenery by having potted plants around.

Another way to add color is to use colorful stationary, just like the home office in picture (5).

Using Your Walls

Here are some ideas on how to use and style your walls in your home office:

  • Built in shelves will help maximize the space you have in your home office. If you put up cabinets, then opt for ones that don’t have handles (this creates a sleeker and more modern look) – just like in pictures (2) and (5).
  • Hang up some pictures or art pieces in matching black frames (3) to help you stay inspired while working

The Command Center: A Modern Desk and Modern Home Office Furniture

The main focal point in a home office is the desk. In the pictures above you can see that all of the home offices use a wooden desk, except one office that uses a white desk. To give yourself a lot of desk space, why not use a built in desk – just like in pictures (5) and (6). Built in units, whether it is for the desk or storage, is a modern design element and helps make the most of the space you have in your home office.

And check out the chairs in the pictures. Again, all are a neutral color – black, white, or grey. They all range in different styles – yet all compliment the modern desks in the space.

Modern Home Office Lighting

For general lighting around the home office use recessed ceiling lights. These are lights that are fitted inside of your ceiling, hidden away, create a sleek and modern look.

If you want to add more lighting for your desk, look at installing some hanging pendant lights (just like in picture (3)), or use a modern desk lamp (just like in picture (4) or the anglepoise lamp in picture (5)).

Decor Pieces

When it comes to decorating a modern home office, I say keep it simple. Some good options include creating a gallery wall. Or use good looking stationary and storage containers that will double as decor pieces – such as wicker baskets, wooden containers, or glass jars.

Invest your time and money in getting good looking pieces for everything mentioned above – the desk lamp, table, chair. These feature pieces will help create a modern style in your home office.

Creative Dorm Room Decorating Ideas That Will Make Styling Your Space So Much Easier

Creative Dorm Room Decorating Ideas That Will Make Styling Your Space So Much Easier

Space is quite limited in a college dorm room. This means a lot of your decorating and styling will done through the main bedroom pieces (bed sheets, area rugs, etc). I will also go over some simple dorm decorating ideas (for guys and girls), tips, and decor pieces your could include to style your space.

Note: You’ll want to check to see if there are any rules when it comes to making changes to your dorm room.

Styling the Main Dorm Room Features

When you walk into your dorm room what are the first things you notice? What pieces take up the most ‘visual space’?

Your bedsheets for example don’t take up much physical space, but they do take up a lot of visual space. Imagine a completely white bedroom – and in the middle you have a bed with red bed sheets. Now say those bed sheets are pink – instantly you’ve changed the whole look and feel of the space, because bed sheets take up a lot of visual space.

  • The bed area has a big impact on the style and feel of your dorm room. Now you’ll probably won’t be able to change the bed frame, but that doesn’t matter. Because we can play around with the bed sheets. Choose a color that goes with the overall color theme that you want for your dorm room. Try and avoid a flat colored fabric. Look for one with a subtle pattern, or a subtle texture. The same goes with the pillowcases
  • An area rug is another piece that can add a pop of color or a subtle pattern to the room
  • If you have any cabinets or a closet in your dorm room, you might be able to give the draws or doors a DIY makeover – by changing the paint color and adding different hardware (DIY Challenge: Give Your Closet Doors a Makeover).
  • Curtains are another dorm room feature that can really impact the style and feel of the room. If you can change them, then look for a color you like, or again a subtle pattern or texture.
  • Decorative Storage: If you have shelves or storage containers laying around, see if you can use decorative storage containers. Some ideas here include using wicker baskets, a copper bucket (this can also be used as a trash can), wire baskets, or wooden crates, trunk, or clutter trays. Have a look at my vintage storage and organization posts for more ideas and some photos.

Simple Dorm Room Decorating Ideas

  • Use fabric. Cover up anything ugly with some good looking fabric. Have a dresser you don’t like the look of, or a desk? Then drape some fabric that you like over it.
  • Cover the whole floor with area rugs to create a cozy place – just like the dorm room in picture (5).
  • See if you can create a gallery wall (3)
  • And add greenery to your dorm room with some plants, even if they are fake – just like in picture (4)
  • Create a more relaxing mood in your dorm room by turning off your ceiling lights. Instead go for a table or floor lamp, or see if you’re allowed to hang up string lights.
  • You’ll probably not be allowed to have candles in your dorm room, but you can still get battery powered candles. Get yours from the Amazon window above.
  • Instead of hanging up posters, why not hang up a tapestry, just like the one in picture (6), which you can get in the Amazon window above
  • And for DIY dorm room decorating ideas, have a look at my page here which shows my collection of DIY decor posts. You’ll find everything there from how to create DIY copper and concrete decor pieces, to using your printer to create home decor items.
