Work in Style: Grey Home Office Ideas


When it comes to grey home offices, you can either 1) paint all of the walls grey, or 2) paint all of the walls white. In this post I go over how to design your space using those two options, and go over specific decor, furniture, and other grey home office ideas.

The Overall Look of the Home Office

Painting all of the walls grey is one way to go. You just need to ask yourself, what shade of grey do you want to use? Dark grey walls will make the home office feel luxurious and secluded. While a light grey home office will feel spacious, large, and open.

Option 2 is to paint all of the walls white. From here you have a blank canvas of a space to decorate with grey pieces. I go over a list of ideas on how to add grey accent pieces to a home office below.

You can always add in another color into the color scheme. You just want to make sure that all the pieces in the room align with the color scheme. Stick with 1-2 other colors. Any more than that, and you take away from the overall grey color scheme. Some good color combinations include:

  • Grey and green
  • Light or dark grey with light yellow
  • Grey and light blue
  • Grey and gold

  • Use a grey area rug
  • Hang up a large painting or photo in a grey frame

  • The shade of blue you choose to decorate your space has a big impact on the feel and style of your home office. The pictures in the mood board have been arranged from light to dark. If you want a bright, spacious feeling home office – then the lighter shades of blue are the way to go. If you want a more secluded and cozy vibe – then go with a dark navy blue home office.
  • Break up solid blue walls with a different colored curtain, like a white one
  • Or hang up a corkboard to pin things to just like in the home office in picture (5)
  • ­Instead of a corkboard, why not create an entire mood board wall
  • Why not create a gallery wall, like the blue office in picture (6). Surround yourself with inspirational pieces.

  • The simple route: The easiest way to style your home office blue, is to create a neutral base. For example use a neutral color such as a white (or light grey, cream, black) paint for the walls. Then you can decorate the space with pops of blue, which will really stand out. See how the blue desk in the blue and white home office in picture (1) stands out.
  • The desk is one way of decorating a neutral colored room blue. How about a blue office chair, or simple blue home office decor pieces like a lamp, trashcan, or other furniture pieces

This is one spacious home office. What I love most about it is that there is a divided work space and relaxing space.

Everything from the floors to the ceiling has a vintage vibe to it. There is the herringbone hardwood floors, the coffer ceiling, exposed brick walls, and classical lamps.

The design also makes the most of the space by using built in floor to ceiling storage. Designed by Denis Krasikov.

Vintage Home Office Accessories Decor

Decor in Storage

In most home offices there is a lot of storing and organizing going on. So why not transform all of this into vintage home office decor pieces. If you use vintage style storage containers, you can then leave them out on display. For example vintage style jars, like Mason Jars, can be used to store stationary supplies, wires, or be even used as drinking cups.

Some other ideas include:

  • Using wire or wicker baskets as office boxes
  • Have a trunk as a side table or storage unit
  • Using glass containers
  • Using enamel buckets or containers
  • Wooden cabinets look great – like the letterpress cabinet on the left in picture (1) or the draws in picture (2)
  • Lockers can be used to store larger items or have shelves inside
  • Storing documents in French shoe boxes (3)

Vintage Office Furniture Ideas

When it comes to the desk in your home office, some style ideas include old wooden desks just like the one in picture (4). A vintage school desk could also work if you don’t need a lot of desk space.

For vintage style office chairs, wooden ones look great but might be tough if you sit a lot. Upholstered office chairs are more comfortable – and to get them to match with a vintage room style go with pastel colors (mint, yellow (5), pink) or brown leather or faux leather.

Decor Pieces and Vintage Office Accessories 

Here are some quick ideas on vintage home office accessories and decor pieces:

  • Birdcages can be used for a number of decor ideas. From housing plants to storing and displaying books. Have a look at my mood board of ideas here: Home Decor Ideas: Using Bird Cages
  • A vintage desk or wall clock (see shopping collection below)
  • An antique globe
  • Skeleton keys hung up on the wall
  • On the walls, hang up some subway signs, metal letters (6), antique maps (7), botanical prints (8), or technical blueprints
  • Galvanised buckets can be used as trash cans
  • Vintage style glass bottles can be used as desk planters (Home Decor Ideas: Using Vintage Glass Bottles)
  • Vintage style clothing pins can be used to hang up photos or inspirational print outs on a piece of rope (9)

Style Through Lighting

I think lights add a great finishing touch to a well designed room. Even in a vintage home office, you can get lights to match the style.

When it comes to desk lamps some ideas include the bankers lamp seen in the shopping mood board below, or an anglepoise/swing arm lamp.
