First it dilutes the paint making the color more translucent. The more glaze added the more transparent the paint will be. Personal preference is what it comes down to on this decision. Take into consideration, if the paint is not translucent, the end result will not be a faux finish. It will look more like a solid paint color, having no depth or texture. The second thing adding glaze to the paint does is, it actually slows down the drying time of the paint. This gives you more time to work your magic, depending on the effect you are going for. When you take these two factors into consideration, adding glaze is an extra expense and requires extra time for measuring and mixing, but is well worth it.

If you are painting a wall and are trying to remove some of what you have painted on which is required by most of the above applications it is almost impossible to achieve the desired result. For best results, I would recommend spending the few extra dollars and buying the glaze. I am a professional Interior Designer who has done most of these finishes myself and even with my experience level would not attempt them without the glaze. In the end, glaze is very forgiving and allows for mistakes and repeating an application until you are satisfied with the desired results. Good luck!

Most applications can be done by the home owner. My suggestion, is to try different ideas, play around with different samples to see what you like and what you are able to do. There are no wrong finishes. Maybe start using cardboard or a left over piece of drywall before you start on your walls.
